SUMMARY:Developing Expertise in Interpreting: Reflection\, Feedback\, and Repetition
DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies for constructive feedback and deliberate practice in this interactive webinar\, focusing on refining interpreting skills through guided reflection\, repetition\, and collaboration.\nInterpreting expertise cannot be achieved by simply working as an interpreter for a long time. Deliberate practice is needed to attain expertise\, and two of the cornerstones of deliberate practice are constructive feedback and repetition. This webinar will help you develop tools to increase the value of the feedback you give to yourself and colleagues. You will be given a rubric to use when giving yourself or others feedback and practice giving constructive\, well-argued feedback for interpreters. \nDuring the session\, you will interpret a short example scenario while recording yourself\, and then you will reflect on your recordings and repeat the scenario to improve. This will give you time to actively apply what you learn during the webinar. You will also receive temporary two-month access to Terp\, an interactive platform for practicing interpreting. You will receive instructions on how to complete practice sessions on Terp and send these practice sessions (which will include recordings of your interpretations) to colleagues to request feedback from them. These learning activities will help you unlock the power of constructive feedback and repetition. \nBy attending this webinar\, you will:\n\nIncorporate principles of deliberate practice into your interpreting training.\nEvaluate interpretations using a structured rubric.\nProvide constructive feedback tailored to interpreters.\nArticulate the strengths and areas for improvement in an interpretation with clarity and objectivity.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nDevin Gilbert is a translation/interpreting practitioner\, educator\, and researcher. He teaches Spanish translation and interpreting as an assistant professor at Utah Valley University鈥檚 Department of Languages & Cultures. His research interests include translation/interpreting pedagogy\, translation process research\, and translation/interpreting technology. He enjoys developing software for the web and is constantly trying to expand his developer skillset. In 2022\, he started Terp\, a web-based interpreting training platform that makes quality\, authentic interpreting practice more accessible and interactive.

SUMMARY:Professional Performance\, All the Time! Part 3
DESCRIPTION:Master dynamic communicative mediation (DCM) to handle interpreting challenges with confidence and precision.\nIdeally\, every interpreter can always interpret every idea and nuance in every speech: respecting the substance and form of the original\, dodging the numerous traps\, and dealing dexterously with all the intricacies of the languages in question. Humor\, irony\, technical terms\, reasoning\, emphasis\, abbreviations\, quotes\, ambiguities\, and the like are all expertly conveyed and we leave the booth with our head held high. \nHowever\, in the real world this is far from always the case\, even for stellar interpreters. The less experienced you are\, the more often you will find it impossible to deliver a hundred percent on the legitimate demands of the delegates; or as an experienced practitioner\, you may decide that brevity better serves communication in a particular case. This is when you need to apply DCM! \nIn this webinar\, you will begin learning how to:\n\nRemain in charge in every situation in the booth.\nPrioritize and prune\, using concision and accuracy to gain 鈥渂rain space.鈥漒nHonor and convey the true meaning and reasoning of your speakers.\nBuild interpreting resilience and professionalism.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nChris Guichot de Fortis is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) with an MA from Cambridge University and an MA in conference interpreting (University of Bath). He was a professional tennis player and served 10 years in the British police. He worked as a NATO interpreter during 1988-2021\, and for 10 years organized the NATO recruitment tests and training program for interpreting students. He has organized volunteer interpreter teams for several non-governmental organizations. He has taught or examined in a dozen schools and is chair of the Belgian AIIC Trainers鈥 Network (BANT). He now works as a freelancer and coaches interpreters\, mainly for B-language improvement and for tests in international organizations.

SUMMARY:Strategies for Excellence in Remote Simultaneous Interpreting
DESCRIPTION:Master the unique challenges of remote simultaneous interpreting. Learn how to avoid common pitfalls and sharpen your skills for this dynamic field.\nRemote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) emerged in 2020 and has since become integral to the daily routine of freelance conference interpreters worldwide. While akin to traditional conference interpreting\, it demands distinct skills and heightened multitasking abilities beyond those typically required in a booth setting. In this webinar\, we鈥檒l explore common mistakes and pitfalls encountered by interpreters across age and experience levels when operating remotely. Come prepared with questions for the Q&A session as we collaborate to enhance our proficiency in this evolving landscape. \nYou will learn how to:\n\nIdentify red flags indicating that the client鈥檚 RSI setup might not work.\nChoose an RSI setup that will help you mitigate risks.\nAvoid the biggest mistakes made by conference interpreters when working on Zoom and similar platforms.\nBe a great boothmate during RSI assignments.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nPaula Ianelli was born and raised in S茫o Paulo\, Brazil\, and has been a translator and conference interpreter for over 15 years. She is a member of AIIC\, APIC\, and TAALS\, and is certified by both ATA and ABRATES. She has interpreted for celebrities like Sandra Bullock and Will Smith\, as well as politicians such as U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former Brazilian President Michel Temer.
